Tips

  • Choose textbooks with a wide range of publication formats.
  • Offer options for different editions of required textbooks.
  • Place instructor-owned copies of class resources on reserve at the University Library Course Reserves.
  • Adopt Open Educational Resources. Email the Open Educational Resources Librarian at libraries.oer@ttu.edu if you have any questions.
  • Create Open Educational Resources. Email the Open Educational Resources Librarian at libraries.oer@ttu.edu if you have any questions.
  • Refrain from requiring access codes as they are typically the most expensive option and cannot be sold back by students after use.
  • Avoid requiring any book that is not going to be used in its entirety.

There are many grants and initiatives to help educators keep book costs low for their students. Use the provided links to find the right one for you or your department.

Open Educational Resources Adoption Incentive Grant

  • Amount: $500 to $5,000
  • Requirements: Texas Tech University faculty, SACSCOC certified for the course(s) affected

Follett Bookstore and TTU Libraries OER Adoption Initiative

  • Amount: $750
  • Requirements: Texas Tech faculty member, full-time instructor, or research professor teaching a core curriculum class, authorized to adopt course materials

Open Textbook Pilot Grant Program

  • Amount: $500,000 to $2,000,000
  • Requirements: Lead the activities of a consortium that is comprised of at least three institutions of higher education, an educational technology or electronic curriculum design expert, and an advisory group of at least three employers, workforce organizations, or sector partners and have demonstrated experience in the development and implementation of open educational resources
